Saturday we got on the road early out to Anza Borrego State Park to see the desert in bloom. With all the heavy rains southern California has been receiving in the past couple of months, we figured it would be spectular. And it was.
It had been 5 years since we last came out to see the wildflowers.
These first set of pictures are from the Coyote Canyon dirt road, as recommended by the very helpful staff at the Anza Borrego visitor's center. We didn't actually make it out to any canyon, that's just the name of the road.
Particularly interesting were the ocotillos in bloom. Most of the year an ocotillo looks like dead sticks. But when it rains, it starts pumping out green leaves, and shortly after that beautiful fire-colored blossoms at the ends of its limbs.
After Coyote Canyon we hiked the Palm Canyon trail, where we met up with some friends. At the top of the trail is a lovely palm oasis.
We ended the day by buying a bag of local grapfruit--10 for 4 dollars. What a bargain!
